About our Welsh Blanket Cushions

In my trips to West Wales (to run my creative retreat here once a year) I have found a deep love of the local textile heritage and their incredible woven blankets. These 'double cloth' designs (meaning that the pattern is evident on both the front and back of the fabric) date back to the turn of the last century and in some woven mills in Wales - are still made today! Subdued colours in one or two shades are said to be earlier patterns, and those in bright almost neon hues are more likely to be from the 60's and 70's. All are made with 100% wool, and usually from the local flock of sheep. No matter the time of production, the graphic and gradient designs are as contemporary as the day they were made.

Due to these fantastic fabrics sometimes being overlooked and under-celebrated in homes and farms across the Welsh countryside over the years, there have been many generations where these beautiful blankets were used as tractor covers, mattress protectors, and stashed away in lofts or cellars. As as an enthusiast with a serious ability to search and repair, I've looked out for any abandoned pieces of torn or chopped down blankets that are otherwise not useful as throws or bedcovering, and have used them to sew together a small collection of Welsh Blanket cushions!

Each piece is usually one of one, and made with deep care and love for this Welsh craft history. Any tiny holes or weaknesses in the woven cloth are carefully stitched and darned with matching coloured thread, and patterns are paired up as closely as possible across the seams while making the most expansive use of the material.

Cushions are made with a zip closure and supplied with their own cushion pad.
